What is effective communication? When a person decides to communicate with another person, they do so to fill a need. Whether it is in pursuit of gaining something or unloading thoughts and feelings, communication provides interaction for people to share. Effective communication comes into play when the receiver (the person listening) interprets the senders (the person speaking) message as it was meant to be interpreted from the sender. So how do you know if you interpreted the sender’s message correctly? By using active listening skills of course!
Active listening begins when you slow down your own mind and thoughts to make room to really listen to another’s words. Once you have listened to the things being said, calmly repeat back to the sender what and how you heard it. By repeating what you heard you give the sender the opportunity to first, know that you were paying attention and secondly, you give the sender the responsibility to clarify anything you may have misunderstood. – From The Soul’s Alliance
